How to Naturally Keep The Bugs Away

Keep the bugs away naturally

Spring has come and summer and is soon to announce its arrival as before we know it the kids will be out of school (heaven help us all). Even more bothersome however, are the smaller pests that are coming to life preparing to ruin picnics, make us itchy, and invade our homes. The pests are coming! Before you resort to chemical warfare, however, you should that there are natural weapons available in your arsenal as well that can help you keep the bugs away.

Prevention
Prevention is, of course the best medicine for all these things Start by keeping a clean home, but especially one free of food sources. This means that not only should floors and rooms be clean and garbage disposed of frequently, but the recycling should be tended to as well. Always rinse out any sugary drinks or "adult beverages" as they are likely to attract a few tiny and hungry friends.

Your last line of defense with these little invaders is the entryway into your home, well actually, entryways to be more precise. As much as possible leave doors and windows closed for most of the time. If they are left open make sure there is screen separating your home from the outside and it is free of holes or cracks where these little creepers can crawl through. Don't forget about the cracks in your doors. If you really want to go all out seal them off, but you can also ward them using a sprays made herbs and essentially oils known for their bug repelling properties like peppermint, rosemary, patchouli, or lavender These also make a great bug repellent when you're out and about

Unfortunately, prevention isn't always possible, but there's more you can do to keep the bugs away naturally.

Scent Them Away
Use the power of scent to keep the bugs away

Nothing repels bugs like the sweet smell of an herb they hate. Considering giving your home a sweet new scent to let these uninvited guests know that they aren't welcome.

You can spread these scents around your home and keep the bugs away by burning incense or dried or herbs to smoke them out. If the smoke isn't to your liking, however you may also try scented candles or potpourri. Another great way technology has given us to do this is by adding our favorite anti-bug essential oils to herbal diffuser that allows you to simply press a button and let it do the work. These diffusers work to spread the scent of your oils through harmless, barely noticable water vapors that leave your room clean, but smelling sweet.

Make your home a less desirable place for pests and keep the bugs away with the power of scent.

It's a Trap

Finally, once these little pests are in your home it can be hard to hunt them down and kill them yourself. One easier way to accomplish your mission (ideally in a period of early detection) is to set a trap. Flies and fruit flies are especially susceptible to this well known home remedy trick to keep the bugs away.

Have you ever heard the expression you can catch more flies with vinegar than you can with honey? It turns out it's actually better to use both. Ideally you should serve a small open dish of apple cider vinegar with a small, but healthy amount of honey. Your flies and other pests will be attracted to the scent and end up getting stuck in the mix, eventually dying.

Some people like to add a a drop or two of dish soap to the mix to finish the little critters off, but that isn't very natural is it?
